A Community Space for Craft Knowledge
This Crafted World is a teaching and learning program run by Crafted Conservation - A furniture and wooden object restoration/conservation studio here in Brisbane, Australia.
We wanted to provide a dedicated space for sharing craft knowledge and skills. We wanted somewhere people could go to learn how to do crafts, but also just learn about the materials and objects that make up the world we live in. We want our space to be somewhere that supports the community around us.
We run courses in crafts of course, but we also host repair cafes, community conservation events, and whatever else we can. And we are always looking for great teachers and craftspeople who need somewhere to share their skills.
A Commitment to Reuse, Repair, and Sustainability
We are dedicated to promoting reuse, repair, and sustainability in our courses. We believe that teaching more people about the materials we use and the way things are made, we can connect better with the physical world around us, and learn how to care for and maintain it as much as possible.
The materials we source for our courses combine reuse and secondhand with sustainably sourced materials. You can be sure that if you take one of our courses, you will learn about where the material you are working with came from, and what it takes to care for it.
Shane Orion Wiechnik
Owner/Teacher/Conservator
I am a restorer/ repairer/ conservator of furniture and related objects. I’ve also been teaching woodworking and repair classes in Australia for over 10 years. I’ve taught to a range of audiences from fine woodworking schools to community environmental programs.
As a professional restorer/conservator who’s worked with such a broad range of pieces, I’ve had the opportunity to learn and witness the breadth of craft skills which create so many of these wonderful pieces.
Over and over I hear that these crafts are dying. At the same time, I hear that more and more people wish they had the opportunity to learn those skills.
Not only do I love teaching what I know, but I believe that sharing an understanding of materials and crafts is an important part of preserving and conserving crafted objects. It’s an important part of understanding the world we live in. So in my own conservation practice, I have made sure to provide a space where we can learn and share skills together!
